Update on Storm Debris Pickup; Leaf Bags Will Be Picked Up

POSTED ON: APRIL 4, 2018 - 3:48PMSTAMFORD, CT – Mayor David Martin and Director of Operations Ernie Orgera are today providing residents with an update on the city-wide storm debris pickup.
“This process has been slow-going, especially in North Stamford, which received the brunt of the damage from multiple March storms,” said Mayor Martin. “But progress is being made, and I want to assure residents that we will get to your house. But winter is hanging on, and every additional storm delays the pickup.”
So far, the teams in the southern part of Stamford have completed the pickup for the Shippan, Waterside, South End, and Cove neighborhoods, and the area surrounding West Avenue. They are currently working in the neighborhoods surrounding Stamford High School, and from Cove Road to Lenox Avenue along the Darien border.
The teams in the northern part of Stamford have completed work in neighborhoods surrounding High Ridge Road at the New York border, and in neighborhoods around Wood Bine Road. They are currently working in the neighborhoods surrounding Erskine Road, Old Long Ridge Road and Mayapple Road. This area is expected to be completed by Friday.
Progress on the debris pickup has been slow, especially in North Stamford where the majority of the tree damage is. Unanticipated cuts to Stamford funding from the state, and extra costs associated with 16 winter storm events, have meant that the City’s current fiscal year budget is tight. So, unfortunately, in order to stay within the bounds of this year’s budget, crews have not been able to do the pickup on overtime.
Lastly, to accommodate resident requests, the Mayor and Director Orgera have also announced that crews will be picking up leaves in biodegradable leaf bags only when they are completing the storm debris pickup.
As announced in earlier releases, there will only be one sweep for storm debris.
